BOOK NEWS & NOTES
Close to home homicides: Are you a fan of "Only Murders in the Building"? Set in an apartment building on the Upper West Side of New York City, the TV show focuses on three residents who join forces to solve murders and record a podcast of their exploits. If this sounds like something that would interest you, check it out on Hulu/Disney+. Or, if you’d rather read such stories, here's a list of books about "amateur detectives, senior sleuths, urban settings and ensemble casts." (The New York Public Library)
Bright lights, big city: Ah, to be young and living in the Big Apple! I was fortunate to have the opportunity to do just that when I was in my 20s and it was quite an adventure. But perhaps you prefer to live vicariously? Then let these YA books put you in a New York state of mind. (Epic Reads)
Coming soon from Hollywood: When your favorite book gets optioned, do you feel excitement or dread? On the one hand, there's the fun of mentally casting characters in your head and the hope that an adaptation will remain true to the source material. On the other hand, when filmmakers transform a book into a movie, many important details are lost. Personally, I try to remain hopeful because every once in a while, the essence of a novel shines on the big screen. Of these 11 books that will be released as films this year, I'm most interested in seeing "Mickey7." What about you? (Reader's Digest)
A greener way to read: To be more environmentally friendly, HarperCollins spent the past three years trying to save paper. How? The company’s book designers started using more "eco-friendly" fonts and page layouts to help reduce each book’s carbon footprint. According to the publisher, these changes have saved more than 245 million pages -- or the equivalent of preserving 5,618 trees. (Fast Company)
